Japan’s SSW Visa System

The Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) visa is a work visa introduced by the Government of Japan to address labor shortages in key industries while creating opportunities for qualified foreign workers. The system is divided into two categories—SSW-1 and SSW-2—each offering different eligibility requirements, benefits, and long-term career prospects.

SSW-1 is designed for workers who possess the necessary skills and basic Japanese language proficiency to work in designated industries. Visa holders can stay in Japan for up to five years through periodic renewals. However, they cannot bring their family members, and the time spent under this status does not count toward Permanent Residency.

SSW-2 is intended for highly skilled and experienced workers who have advanced technical expertise and leadership capabilities. This category allows unlimited visa renewals, permits workers to bring their spouse and children to Japan, and counts toward the residency period required to apply for Permanent Residency. Unlike SSW-1, Japanese language testing is generally not required for SSW-2, although candidates must pass an advanced industry-specific skills examination.

Understanding the differences between SSW-1 and SSW-2 helps candidates choose the most suitable pathway based on their qualifications, career goals, and long-term plans in Japan.
